How does Zovirax (Acyclovir) work?
The herpes virus needs an enzyme called DNA polymerase to copy its genetic material from RNA to DNA. This process is necessary for the virus to multiply and continue to survive. When Zovirax (Acyclovir) is applied, its active ingredient Acyclovir is converted to a more active form inside those cells of the body that are infected with herpes simplex. Acyclovir then works by blocking the action of the DNA polymerase. This way it prevents the herpes virus from reproducing and infecting more cells. This controls the infection and helps the immune system to deal with it.
What is the recommended dosage?
Doses range from 200-800mg every 4 hours (usually 5 times a day).
Can women who are pregnant or breastfeeding use this medication?
There isn’t enough information available about the effects of Zovirax (Acyclovir) on pregnant women. If you are pregnant, consult your doctor first before using this medication.
Breastfeeding women are advised not to use Zovirax (Acyclovir) as this medication passes into breast-milk and may harm a nursing infant.
How long does it take for this Zovirax (Acyclovir) to work?
The effects of Zovirax (Acyclovir) on a herpes infection are usually felt within 24 hours of the first application. Treatment usually lasts between 5-10 days.
Can I drink alcohol while using Zovirax (Acyclovir)?
Alcohol use should be limited because it can further increase certain side effects associated with Zovirax (Acyclovir), such as dizziness, headaches, diarrhea and nausea.
